Synopsis
Step Kids is a contemporary take on a classic Broadway musical.
Set at the tryouts for a competitive step dance team, at its core, Step Kids is about community and finding one's tribe.
The musical is set at a predominantly Black school. Throughout the show we explore Blackness, queerness, Black mental health, and what it is to find one's voice and community in an unlikely place - the tryouts for a step team.
Step brings these characters together and when a toxic step dance coach (Voice of God) tears them down and exploits their insecurities, the dancers ultimately reject the toxicity and form their own step dance team.
They come to the tryouts to win a coveted spot on the All Stars squad and they ultimately create their own radically inclusive team that celebrates all their differences.
Step Kids honors the beauty and brilliance of Black ingenuity as step dancing originated from Enslaved People when their drums were taken away.
Approximate run time: 90 minutes
